A comparative study on parenting characteristics among three types stepmothers
Kim Tae-Han

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare prevailing parenting characteristics among three types stepmothers. Their parenting characteristics were categorized into dissociated, dissolved, or settled one. The first type refers to the cases where stepmothers were not given enough opportunities to nurture their stepchild(ren) due to the child(ren)`s frequent runaways, while the stepmothers belonging to the second group failed to adjust into their new family and left the family. The third group was able to establish an amicable relationship with their stepchild(ren). Two typical cases of each type were selected. Process recordings from in-depth interviews with the mothers were coded and analyzed. Four common upper categories were obtained from continuous comparisons of themes from the process recordings: views of parenting, disciplines to stepchild(ren)`s behavioral issues, rapport between stepmother-stepchild(ren), and parenting role divisions between husband and wife. The researcher compared among three parenting types under the four upper categories and presents the results in a matrix format.
